In this ongoing class, learners will explore and learn about a different letter each meeting, by practicing making the sounds/shapes of the letter, viewing and creating art, and reading book(s), about the focus letter of each class.

Class Experience

This is an ongoing art class where learners explore a different letter of the alphabet in each class.   Learners will explore each letter by looking at art about subject matter that begins with the focus letter of the class, by learning about the sounds and shape(s) of the focus letter,  and by creating art to build fine motor, critical thinking, and drawing skills.  I will show examples of art with subject matter that begins with the focus letter.   Learners will practice hearing and saying the sounds of the letter, drawing and tracing the focus letter, and creating art about subject matter that begins with the letter.  Learners will use play dough, pencils, crayons, paper, scissors/glue, and/or finger paint, to create their own art related to the letter.  I will give parents a supply list and PDF's to print out, for students to practice and learn how to make each letter (playdough mats.)  I will lead the class and have times where I am direct-teaching, using questioning to engage learning, encouraging participation through interactive activities, and giving positive feedback.   I will use video clips and/or slideshows, read books or parts of books, and show art examples.  I will have discussion and practice times for making/drawing/tracing the focus letter, and I will have a time for learners to create art and ensure learners time to share their learning and creations each class.

Learning Goals

Students will improve their understanding of the letters A-Z by learning about a different focus letter in each class.  Learners will view, talk about, and create art, as well as read books about, subjects that begin with each class's focus letter.

Supply List

1 color of playdough, a printed out copy of the playdough mat PDF, 3-5 sheets of white paper, such as construction paper, copy paper, etc., a pencil, crayons,  finger paint, q-tips, and an object or picture of an object that starts with the focus letter of that class (for show and tell.)

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

We will refer to the books ABC Museum, ABC: Early Learning at the Museum, and an "Alpha Tales" book for each class. Depending on the class, we will use more books, PDF's, videos, and/or slideshows.
