No prior experience to dance is necessary to participate in this course. We will begin the class with students introducing themselves. Please ensure that there is ample room in the floor space around you that allows for body movement side to side and front and back. We will begin the group warm-up. Following this first-class, all classes will begin with a quick hello and then a group warm-up. However, it is recommended, that you begin stretching before class begins. Following this, I...
Students will have learned the basics of flamenco dance and will have learned a short but complete routine by the end of the course to include body movement of footwork, arm-work and basic understanding of the rhythm.
Homework is simply request for rehearsing the footwork sequences taught during the class. Incorporating upper & lower body (braceos and taconeos) may need to be practiced in order to present the following week. Normally coordinating the steps is where the difficulty lies.
First of all, ensure that there is ample room for movement. We need more than wingspan as we will most definitely be moving in a larger span of space. Dancers will need hard-soled shoes / slight heel or lift. If a flamenco dance shoe is available to dancer, please inquire with instructor for resources. Flamenco shoes are normally $40-60. If you choose to buy some, please contact me. If this is the first time your child is using any such shoes or similar, ensure on the first class of the safety on your child on the dance floor space you have provided. Flamenco skirt; if not, a long flowy skirt is recommended. Boys are welcome to join and can join with stretchable pants or pants that give room and won't drag on floor, hard-soled shoes recommended.
Student will be given informal assessment; each student will have opportunity to demonstrate for class/instructor when asked upon as instructor will ask each student to perform a task after a certain step is taught.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Parental guidance is not required but if parents are needed to make sure spacing is adequate, please feel free to remain in the room. Encourage your child to stretch before logging on. Though we begin with a warm-up, it is recommended that students stretch. Parents, it is recommended that a water bottle is provided for your child. Please check your child's shoes on the floor choice you have made available (potential of scuffing surface).
