Writing is one of the greatest and essential ways to communicate, and I am excited to be offering this on-going individualized private tutoring class on writing for academic or creative writing. This course covers all types of the different tones to writing (academic, informative, persuasion, and/or commentary) to creative writing. The class is designed to be individualized for the student and parents to build on the current strengths of writing to areas that are challenging. The course also dives deep into introductions, body paragraphs, and conclusions. Examples of the Areas the Class can Cover: Introductions ~ One of the main challenges students sometimes will face in middle or high school is writing an amazing (knock your socks) introduction. In our class we will cover Mr. G's Model to introduction with an amazing hook or engagement (there are six to ten different methods for hooking the reader), unpacking or explaining the topic that aligns with the rest of the paper, road mapping topics for your reader, and thesis statements! The class will cover methods for hooking your reader like: Opening with a question, using data or statistics, quotes, telling a narrative story, paint a picture for the reader, start with a poem, using figurative devices (metaphor, simile, hyperbole, idiom, Onomatopoeia), alliteration, and/or leading your audience to the importance of the topic. Our class will also work creating amazing thesis statements (could be one or two sentences), and the main emphasis will be on creating claims plus premises to the thesis statement. Body Paragraphs ~ Another challenge that students sometimes will face in middle or high school is writing an amazing (knock your socks) academic paragraphs. In our class we will cover the TIQA Model to writing paragraphs and Mr. G's Model, which goes a little bit beyond the TIQA Model. The TIQA Model stands for: Topic Sentence, Introduce the Quote, the Quote, and Analysis. Mr. G's Model adds reasoning and logic to the analysis. In this extremely fun and educational class, we will learn how to use both models for writing topic notch academic paragraphs that will truly knock the socks off anyone grading your paragraphs. Conclusions ~ many times I have found that students struggling with face the writing of amazing conclusions. In our class we will cover Mr. G's Model to writing amazing conclusions that go beyond a summary by exploring future aspects of the topic. The most common aspect that readers will remember the most is the introduction and conclusions. Our course will focus on amazing topics sentences for conclusions using many of the same devices we might for a hook in an introduction. Examples in include: Concluding with a question, using data or statistics, quotes, painting a picture for the reader, using figurative devices (metaphor, simile, hyperbole, idiom, Onomatopoeia), alliteration, and/or leading your audience to the future importance or aspects of the topic. Or if you are into creative writing covering the resolution part of the rising action and creating a cliff hanger for the next chapter of the story.
