Class Experience

Students will listen and explore the various styles and artists of jazz. Jazz music skyrocketed in the 1920s for a reason, and that reason was because of its uniqueness and diversity. As a class, we will listen, explore, and discuss the various styles and personalities we hear in jazz. There are no wrong descriptors on what you hear, as one's interpretation varies between person to person. Opinions and different music perspectives will be respected and encouraged in our discussion. In our class, we will listen to a specific jazz album in a specific jazz style. Jazz styles range from swing, latin, funk, bebop, and contemporary amongst many others. Each week will be different, which allows learners to join at any point throughout the course. Discussion length may vary if there are few students enrolled, however, all the important features will still be taught.

The artists we will listen to will include but are not limited to: Miles Davis, Buddy Rich, Hank Mobley, Gordon Goodwin, Snarky Puppy, Glenn Miller, etc. Not only will students learn about their styles and histories, but they will learn about the instruments they played and common instrumentation for a jazz ensemble.

This is a great course for students who like to listen to jazz or want to learn more about jazz history and its influencers!

I've been a jazz musician for the majority of my music career, and throughout my time in college, I have had many opportunities to preform and understand jazz on a whole new level. I've performed along side some of the greatest jazz musicians alive today and am eager to share my own personal experiences and knowledge with my students.
