This camp is perfect for young watercolor artists who want to try out various painting projects in a relaxed and social environment. Please note that this class will work best for somewhat self-directed young artists who are able to talk and play games while painting. I will provide examples and mini-lessons at the beginning of each class, but there will not always be continuous direct instruction while students work on their projects, chat, and play games. Each class, I will present a new open-ended project and teach any relevant techniques, tricks, and tips. Learners will get to personalize their projects and discuss what they choose to make with their peers. While we paint, I will provide games and funny discussion questions and games, such as "Would You Rather...?" questions and "Two Truths and a Lie" to encourage a fun and social environment while we paint! At the end of class, we will share our projects and discuss what was either fun or challenging about the assignment. Day 1) Resist Paintings Using Crayons - In our first class, we will make "resist" paintings using crayons. Learners will decide what they want to paint, and draw an outline with lightly colored crayons. Next, they will paint their picture with watercolors and watch as paint resists the crayon lines leaving a clear outline to the drawing. I will provide optional instructions on how to make a crayon spiderweb with a colorful watercolor background for those who want to start off with a guided example project. Day 2) Still Life with Found Objects - At the beginning of this class, learners will gather objects from their house or yard and arrange them into an interesting composition. Then they will sketch and paint the scene that they created! Day 3) Painting from the Imagination - In our third class, learners will get to use their imaginations to create, sketch, and paint an imagined scene. I will provide optional prompts for learners who want help deciding what to paint (ranging from flying pigs to designing a new planet). Day 4) Experimenting with Abstract Designs with Masking Tape, Salt, and/or Plastic Wrap - In this class, learners will get to experiment with the effects of using table salt, plastic wrap, and/or masking tape to block or change the pigment of their watercolors. These strategies lead to interesting visual effects that will make unique and colorful abstract designs! Students will also use this class to make colorful abstract paintings that can used in our final class to cut and paste into their collages. Day 5) Watercolor Collage - For our last class, learners will use any scraps or unwanted pieces created throughout the week to create a collage. Learners will also have the option to include other found objects, pictures, and magazine clippings in their collages. For this class, learners should have watercolor paints, brushes, paper, pencil, eraser, scissors, glue stick (or liquid glue), masking tape, salt, plastic wrap, and crayons. If you are missing one or more of these materials, please reach out to me and I will make an accommodation so that your child can still participate fully!
