Class Experience

** Although this class builds on previous topics, a brief review will always be provided when applicable so that everyone is on the same page!

Ever wonder how people are able to win lawsuits in cases like: slip and fall, medical malpractice, personal injury, or defamation? Well then this is the class for you!

In this class, we will learn about Torts. When a person commits a tort, they have wronged or caused an injury to another person. The person that is wronged is able to seek compensation in civil court. Studying the law of torts provides the legal theories behind these types of causes of actions and lawsuits.

This class will be a mixture of lecture, case analysis, and class discussion in order to help learners develop a deep understanding of this area of law. At the end of studying a topic, we will test our understanding by working through law-exam type essay prompts to see if students are able to spot the issues and name what needs to be shown in order to have a viable claim.

In this class we will cover:
- intentional torts,
- negligence,
- defamation/libel
- vicarious liability
- strict liability
- products liability

Some of the cases we will be looking at are: Garratt v. Dailey, Hackbart v. Cincinnati Bengals, United States v. Carroll Towing Co., Martin v. Herzog, the Palsgraf case, and more!
