US Grade Kindergarten - 4
This class is for students learning to read using the curriculum All About Reading, Levels 1-4 (a reading program based on the Orton-Gillingham methodology). Students must have the All About Reading student activity book and readers to participate in this class. If you have questions about All About Reading or need help selecting a level please message me. Classes begin with a phonics review. Then, we work on the lesson concept or prepare to read a story. I strive to make learning to read fun and many of the activities are games! Activities may also include additional stories, videos, and songs. The after-class feedback may include a link with extra activities your child can use to practice the related concept. These are not required. Each lesson's content will depend on the child's progress. Some students may need to review concepts more than once before introducing new material. This is OK! I encourage students to build a strong reading foundation. I want students to feel confident and enjoy reading. I encourage parents to message me if the child is struggling with a concept to help tailor the lesson to the child's current needs. Depending on the level of the student we will be practicing: Letters & sounds, Blending, Decoding, Sight Words/Leap Words, Word Families, Rhyming, and Comprehension. *Level 1 students should know most of the initial A-Z letter names and sounds. They do not need to know all of the letters but they should be able to tell me most of them. For example: A says /a/ (short a), C says /k/, etc. If you have not used AAR before please use this placement test or schedule a class for an assessment. AAR placement test: https://www.allaboutlearningpress.com/reading-placement?srsltid=AfmBOorZHlhjvB24swkbHY69JITxya9016PZ8X9gZOoUoAafGJ1xzkRg This class is open to all ages. Older students are welcome :) **Please note - my weeks off in the summer of 2025 are: June 23-29, July 25-Aug 1, and Aug 18-24. ***** Below is an example of a common schedule for a once-a-week class intending to complete an AAR level during one school year. This is an example and not the only option for tutoring. Please message me to discuss how I can best help you and your learner. The plan: I meet with your child to introduce a concept lesson and for the remainder of the week you review the concept and work on the story lesson. For example in Level 1: The student attends class and I introduce the concept in lesson 20, the SH phonogram. After class, the parent/guardian helps the student review lesson 20 with the student activity book (1-3 days). Once lesson 20 is complete, the student works on lesson 21 and reads the stories "Run!" and "Six Fish" (1-3 days). Some lessons will take more than a week to complete and each student will move at their own pace. Please message me if you have any questions or requests for class times. ****** Students are asked to have a writing option (whiteboard, paper and pencil, etc) available for each class. Most class days your student will not need these items, but it is good to have them available. Students will also need their readers for story classes. To better hear student pronunciation, I recommend (but do not require) that students have a headset with a microphone or a microphone in class. Here are a couple of options: Headset (this is the headset I use): https://a.co/d/69gT5C0 Microphone (this microphone has the option of plugging in headphones): https://a.co/d/dTrd6q5 **Policy** Per Outschool policy, if a student is more than 10 minutes late, it will be considered a missed class and not eligible for a refund. If no students have arrived at a class by 12 minutes after the start time I will end the class. If a student needs to cancel class, I will offer a reschedule when possible or issue a refund, as long as I am notified more than 24 hours in advance. In the case of a teacher scheduling conflict, I will offer to reschedule the class or issue a refund for the missed class. Thank you so much for respecting my time. :o)
Learning Goals
Students will work toward completing an AAR level by learning phonograms, leap words, and decoding skills.
Other Details
Learning Needs
I have found the online game format helps engage many students with ADHD. AAR was designed to help students with dyslexia. Older students learning to read are welcome in this class.
Parental Guidance
Students may occasionally watch videos on YouTube to reinforce an idea. Videos will be age-appropriate. We may also read age-appropriate stories from Epic Books. I may use additional age-appropriate books depending on the student.
Pre-Requisites
Level 1 students should know most of the letter names and sounds. They do not need to know all the letters but should be able to say most of them. For example: A says /a/ (short a), C says /k/, etc. *Assesment available for levels 2-4.

Hello!
My name is Kate. I am a homeschool mom, small farm owner, herbalist, gluten-free baker, online teacher, and lover of books. I have taught for over 20 years: home school, alternative education, small co-ops, and as a substitute in public schools. Additionally, I have taught English as a Second Language online with VIPKid and Cambly for over 6 years. It has been amazing meeting and working with students around the world. I love getting to know each of my students and helping them learn new things in a fun way.
All About Reading: 20 years ago, when I first began teaching reading, I was trained in the Spaulding reading method. Spaulding is based on Orton-Gillingham and is similar to the All About Reading Program. When I was introduced to All About Reading I was hooked. All About Reading provided the sequential layout that I loved from Spaulding in an easier layout. I also loved the games that provided a multi-sensory experience for my students. I love to use games when I am teaching. I think learning should be enjoyable. In my reading classes, we turn the All About Reading program into fun online games.
Thank you and I look forward to seeing your child in my class.
(A little about my family and philosophy: I have two homeschool graduates and two young learners. Throughout our homeschool journey, we learned, we grew, we did better next time, and we found success. I believe it is important to meet children where they are. To strengthen their weaknesses and support their strengths while having fun and encouraging them to be who they were meant to be. )
