Class Experience

US Grade 7 - 10
Beginner Level
Welcome to Python Level 2, where students transform their foundational coding knowledge into practical, real-world applications! Over this 10-week journey, your student will expand their Python skills by diving deeper into essential programming concepts like file handling, data structures, graphical interfaces, and databases. Through hands-on projects, students will experience the excitement of creating functional applications while developing problem-solving skills that extend far beyond coding.

What sets this course apart is our project-based approach that keeps students engaged and motivated. From developing a feature-rich Todo List application to creating interactive data visualizations and even building their own Pong game, students will be amazed at what they can accomplish by the end of the course. Our supportive class environment encourages collaboration and creativity, allowing each student to grow at their own pace while receiving personalized guidance from our experienced instructor.

Course Highlights

✅ Advanced Python Concepts: From functions and global variables to data collections, file operations, and GUIs
✅ Real-World Applications: Learn how Python is used in data science, game development, and database management

Prerequisites 📋

This course is designed for students who have completed either our Python Level 1 course, our Python Summer Camps (Levels I and II), or an 8-10 week Python for Beginners course. Students should be comfortable with basic Python syntax, simple variables, and elementary control flow concepts. No advanced programming knowledge is required—just enthusiasm and a willingness to learn! ✨

Learning Goals

Build Simple Python Applications - Students will learn to create basic but complete Python programs from start to finish. They'll understand how to plan their code using flowcharts and develop applications like a Todo List.
Students will become comfortable working with dictionaries, file operations, and different ways to organize data in Python. They'll practice reading from files, writing to files, and using Python's built-in tools to solve everyday problems.

Syllabus

8 Lessons
over 2 Weeks
Lesson 1:
Foundations of Python Programming
This week will cover the basics of Python programming. Students will review variables, conditional statements, and functions. They'll apply these concepts in a Fizz Buzz mini-project and explore nested conditional statements. The week will conclude with an introduction to scope, the global keyword, and the pass statement, providing a solid foundation for the rest of the course.

Lesson 2:
Planning and Project Development
Students will learn the importance of planning in coding projects. They'll be introduced to flowcharts and brainstorming techniques for breaking down problems. The majority of the class will be spent on the Outschool Pizza Shop project, where students will apply their knowledge to develop a multi-day project, reinforcing previous concepts in a practical, engaging context.
60 mins online live lesson
Lesson 3:
Advanced Python Concepts
This class focuses on more advanced Python concepts. Students will explore Python methods, including string and math methods. They'll learn about ternary operators for concise conditional statements and study Python's keywords and reserved words. These concepts will enhance their ability to write more efficient and readable code.

Lesson 4:
File Operations and Loops
Students will dive into file operations, learning to read from, write to, and append to files. They'll create their own files and manipulate data within them. The class will also include a comprehensive review of loops, with a focus on while loops, providing students with tools to handle repetitive tasks and data processing efficiently.

Over 5,000 students from nearly 100 countries across a variety of platforms have started coding in one of my classes. I offer classes covering the foundations of Python and AI. Before teaching, I worked as a software developer for nearly 10 years. I've worked for organizations including Apple, Dell, and Best Buy. I believe the best way to learn is by doing and all my classes are based around hands-on projects that progressively build in difficulty. I'm a graduate of Mount St. Mary's University in Emmitsburg, Maryland. I can't wait to meet your learner in the class and get started soon.
