Beginner Level
Join nearly 1,000 successful students worldwide in this highly-rated Python programming course, led by David Sofield, an expert instructor with 5+ years of teaching experience on Outschool. Over 8 engaging weeks, students will master Python fundamentals while building exciting projects like interactive games (rock-paper-scissors, space catcher), creative applications (mad libs, spiral animations), and practical tools (login systems, calendar applications). By course completion, students will have a strong foundation in coding and be well-prepared to advance through a comprehensive Python curriculum in Levels 2, 3, and 4. Week 1 Meet Python! Continuing Python Education Students can continue learning more about Python with a structured coding path available on Outschool. Python Level I Python Level II Python Level III Python Level IV Introduction to AI, Machine Learning & Python Introduction to Data Science, Big Data, & Python Interactive Groups Build the Foundation of Code Skills Every student is encouraged to post questions, sample code, and their projects every step of the way. This gives students the chance to learn from each other and start practicing reading code. The instructor will also be providing feedback and guidance regularly throughout the course. The class is a supportive, positive, and fun environment for all students! There is no coding or computer science experience required for this class. Technology Requirements Students will use Code with Mu, a free code editor designed specifically for beginners. Code with Mu requires any Windows, Mac, or Linux computer.
Learning Goals
Students will write Python programs using variables, loops, conditionals, and functions. Through eight hands-on projects, they will transform their ideas into working code while following best practices.
Students will solve programming challenges by breaking complex problems into manageable steps using computational thinking. They will practice these skills through designing solutions and debugging code.
Syllabus
8 Lessons
over 8 WeeksLesson 1:
Introduction to Python
This week, we'll dive into the basics of Python, a powerful and versatile programming language. We will learn about different data types like strings and integers, and how to perform mathematical operations. We'll also introduce you to variables and the concept of good code. Through a mini-project and practice challenges, you'll apply what you've learned and start your journey in coding.
60 mins online live lesson
Lesson 2:
Conditional Statements and Mad Libs Game
In our second week, we'll explore control flow in Python using conditional statements and comparison operators. You'll learn how to make decisions in your code with if/else and if/elif/else statements. We'll also create a fun Python Mad Libs game as a project to apply these concepts. Practice challenges will help reinforce your understanding of control flow.
60 mins online live lesson
Lesson 3:
Lists, Libraries, and Rock, Paper, Scissors
This week focuses on Python lists, libraries, and the rock, paper, scissors game. You'll learn how to work with lists, use list methods, and understand the importance of libraries in Python. We'll also introduce conditional operators and work on a Rock, Paper, Scissors project. Troubleshooting tips and the importance of being a good searcher will be discussed, along with practice challenges.

Bachelor's Degree from Mount St. Mary's University
Over 5,000 students from nearly 100 countries across a variety of platforms have started coding in one of my classes. I offer classes covering the foundations of Python and AI. I am an Outschool Ace Educator and personally teach every class. Before teaching, I worked as a software developer for nearly 10 years. I've worked for organizations including Apple, Dell, and Best Buy. I believe the best way to learn is by doing and all my classes are based around hands-on projects that progressively build in difficulty. I'm a graduate of Mount St. Mary's University in Emmitsburg, Maryland. I can't wait to meet your learner in the class and get started soon.
