In this fun class we will learn about penguins and then create a piece of art using food. We get to eat our projects at the end of class!

Class experience

Students will be able to recount 2 things they've learned about penguins.
Students will have the opportunity to use their creativity to explore using food as art.
One of my goals is to keep my students engaged during the entire lesson. This is one way to do it. We talk and learn about penguins in the beginning of the class and then get busy with our food art and, of course, eating our creation upon completion! I've taught this class as part of science curriculum, art, and after-school activities. It's always been a hit!
1 chocolate roll snack cakes (Little Debbie Swiss Rolls or something similar. The bigger rolls/krimpets work better.)
    1 orange slices/orange gumdrops
    1 marshmallows
    1 Tootsie Rolls
    2 edible eyes
* Ingredients may be substituted as long as the replacement items will stick to the Swiss Roll. Beware! The Swiss Rolls are very delicate and may fall apart if handled roughly :) I also found that using a tiny bit of frosting will help the penguin parts stick better to the rolls.
** Alternative (Somewhat) Healthier Version:
1 small banana
Chocolate frosting (small amount for dark part of penguin)
3 Goldfish snack crackers
2 edible eyes
1 kabob stick or cake pop stick
There is a supply list mentioned below that parents should have gathered prior to the start of class. This is an easy to prepare (purchasing simple supplies) and easy to follow class. Students should not have food next to them during the lesson part of the class. We want to have some left for when we create! :) The art project will take place at the end of the lesson.
