Beginner Level
In this course, students will learn about the five different instrument families. They will learn about what makes each instrument family unique through stories, videos, and interactive quizzes. Students will hear the unique sound of each instrument discussed in class. The course has four sections: 1. How do instruments work? The string family. 2. The brass and woodwind families 3. The percussion and keyboard families 4. Let's visit the symphony orchestra review These sections will be presented to the students through Nearpod and Flipgrid. The instructor will generally comment on students submitted Flip videos within 48 hours. Students will complete interactive quizzes to show everything they have been learning. Each section will take between approximately 20-30 minutes to complete. By the end of the session, students will have a new appreciation for the instruments in the symphony orchestra. They may even have a new favorite instrument!

over 4 WeeksLesson 1:
How do instruments work? The string family
Learn how instruments make sound in this lesson. We will also learn how we classify instruments into groups called "families." We will learn about five instruments in the string family, the violin, viola, cello, and double bass.
Lesson 2:
The brass and woodwind families
Learn how brass instruments and woodwind instruments use air to make sound. We will learn about the trumpet, trombone, tuba, french horn, clarinet, flute, bassoon, oboe, and saxophone.
Lesson 3:
The percussion and keyboard families
Learn how the percussion and keyboard families make sound. We will learn about pitched and unpitched percussion instruments and keyboard instruments like the piano, organ, and harpsichord.
Lesson 4:
Let's visit the symphony!
In this lesson we will explore all the instruments in the symphony orchestra by studying "A Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra" by Benjamin Britten. A listening guide will be provided to help you hear for the different instrument families. The guide uses questions, drawing, and movement to engage the learner.

Parental Guidance
This course will use the Nearpod platform to present the lesson material in an interactive way.
Students will also use the Flip platform to make videos to demonstrate learning. If students do not wish to use the Flip platform, they can also make videos directly on Outschool.
Videos included in the lesson material will be from the YouTube platform.
Sources
This course will use Nearpod and Flipgrid in addition to Outschool. Learners will receive the access codes for the lesson materials after signing up for the course.
