Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 8
Writing an essay is an essential skill for students but can be a challenge for them to know where to begin. This course will give students an introduction to essays or an opportunity to get a refresher on them. We will discuss what an essay is, distinguish the four main types, and identify practical strategies to construct one. We will also talk about the process of brainstorming, the importance of an outline, and various devices to ensure our essay makes an impact on our audience. This class is packed with information and examples, and I frequently ask questions to support the student's understanding.

Points to be emphasized include:

  Identifying an argument, point, or theme;
  Brainstorming;
  Creating an outline:
  Supporting your work with credible evidence; and
  Proofreading your essay.

As this is an introductory course, students are not required to bring anything but asking questions and taking notes are highly suggested. At the end of class, we will play a short trivia game to show off what we have learned about essays.

As this is an inclusive class, all students are welcome. If your student has special abilities or requires accommodations, please let me know.

** PLEASE NOTE: I also offer private tutoring in essay writing which includes individual instruction, feedback, and discussion with the student. In these sessions, I address specific questions or issues the student may have. Please contact me for more information.

Learning Goals

Students will gain an understanding of an essay, its role in improving our knowledge, and techniques to write one.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree from University of South Carolina
I have extensive experience working with children, adolescents, and young adults within the educational and mental health systems. While in graduate school, I was a part-time college instructor which ignited my passion for teaching. I then became a mental health therapist, working in residential facilities as well as in the community. For the past six years, I have taught students online, which has been rewarding and challenging in ways that continue to inspire me.

Along with being a teacher, I am also a writer. I have had two short stories published, and I continue to regularly submit material. For three years, I had a blog that included my short stories, reviews, and opinions on various issues. Other examples of my writing experience consist of curriculums for an independent living program, program descriptions, numerous website articles, as well as online advertisements. I enjoy sharing my passion for writing with students and hearing about what inspires them. I strive to provide a supportive atmosphere for my students, allowing them to harness and express their creativity in ways unique to them.

Throughout my educational and professional careers, I have implemented various tools in my own life to create and maintain a system of learning, organization, and balance. After successes and failures alike, I now believe the knowledge of "how to learn" is a skill that serves us well after we graduate from school. I enjoy sharing these valuable skills with students who may discover a new way to be productive, feel confident as they plan for their future, and apply them to different parts of their lives for the rest of their lives.
