Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
In this class we'll learn all about color! We'll learn how colors are made, what they often represent, and how they're used in art. We'll look at A LOT of colorful samples from ancient art all the way through to modern examples. This is a fun, laid back class where everyone has a chance to look at some cool pieces of art and talk about color! Everyone is welcome to join in the discussions or to just look and listen.

We won't have an art project in this class, but as we look at art we'll discuss what we like and how certain elements could be incorporated into our own artwork.

What to expect during class:

Week 1:
We'll start with introductions where everyone can share their favorite color and type of art (painting, sculptures, drawing, pottery, etc.). Then we'll look at early examples of colors used in art and how they were created, specifically paint and glazes. We'll talk about some of the tools used by early artists. I'll have plenty of examples to share throughout the class as we explore centuries worth of color in art! As we look at ancient examples we'll discover what they looked like back when they were made.

Week 2:
We'll all say hello, then talk about what colors often represent and how they're used to capture specific moods. We'll look at a lot of examples and talk about what we see. No answer is wrong! Its fun to see how we all observe art differently. We'll finish the class by playing a fun "I Spy" style game.

Week 3:
In this class we'll do a brief overview of the previous classes. We'll look at the color wheel and discuss warm and cold colors and look at how they're used in art. We'll discuss the eye-catching effects of color as well as different painting styles. Everyone will have a chance to talk about their favorite colors and artwork if they'd like.

Learners will be introduced to a lot of artwork! We'll look at examples from ancient to modern times. learn how color was first used and made (from minerals, chemicals, etc). They'll learn to associate certain colors with mood. We'll look at the color wheel and learn about warm and cool colors. We'll also look at how color is used in several different painting styles. Above all I hope that each learner learns to have fun looking at and talking with others about art!

Learning Goals

Students will learn more about one of the elements of art - color. They will gain a better understanding of how and why it's used and practice confidently sharing their opinions about color and art!
