Did you know that axolotls can regrow their limbs and even parts of their hearts and brains? In this interactive 4-week course, learners will dive into the fascinating world of axolotls—one of the most unique amphibians on Earth! Through engaging discussions, hands-on activities, and live animal interactions, learners will explore: ✅ Axolotls’ incredible abilities and adaptations ✅ Their role in the wild and why they are critically endangered ✅ How scientists study axolotls for medical breakthroughs ✅ What it takes to care for an axolotl as a pet responsibly Each week will include interactive activities to spark curiosity, plus an opportunity to see one of the real axolotls from my collection! Whether your learner dreams of owning an axolotl or simply wants to learn more about these fascinating creatures, this class is the perfect place to start. Weekly Breakdown & Activities: 🔬 Week 1: What Is an Axolotl? What makes axolotls unique? Where do they come from, and what do they eat? Fun facts and common misconceptions 🌟 Activity: Learners will create their own "Axolotl Adaptation Card", illustrating key features of an axolotl and explaining why they are important for survival. 🌍 Week 2: Axolotls in the Wild & Conservation Why are axolotls critically endangered? What threats do they face in their natural habitat? How can we help protect axolotls? 🌟 Activity: "Survival Challenge" – Learners will work together to brainstorm solutions for helping axolotls in the wild, creating a simple conservation action plan. 🧬 Week 3: Science & Regeneration Superpowers How do axolotls regrow body parts? How are scientists studying axolotls to help human medicine? Hands-on activity: Exploring regeneration in nature 🌟 Activity: "Regeneration Experiment" – Learners will conduct a simple experiment demonstrating how axolotls regrow limbs and why this is unique in the animal kingdom. 🐠 Week 4: Axolotls as Pets—Care & Responsibility What does it take to care for an axolotl? Common myths about pet axolotls Ethical considerations & responsible pet ownership 🌟 Activity: "Axolotl Pet Planner" – Learners will design a pretend Axolotl Care Plan, listing tank setup, diet, and key responsibilities for keeping an axolotl healthy. Homework (Optional): Each week, learners will have an optional activity sheet to review key concepts and explore axolotls further through fun challenges. With 20+ years of experience caring for axolotls in zoos, aquariums, and rescues, I can’t wait to share my love for these incredible creatures! If enrollment is less than group minimum, class may be shorter each week.
