All About Atoms: Demos, Simulations, and Games

US Grade 5 - 8
All About Atoms is the first class in my super fun series for middle school physical science. I keep the classes small and have carefully planned each lesson to truly make the most of 1 hour with any student. The students will be engaged and have a blast as they learn about elements, atoms, protons, neutrons, electrons, mass number, and charge through discussions and demonstrations using household materials. These concepts will be reinforced through playing with PHET simulations. Bad chemistry jokes will be included in each lesson...all the good ones argon. :)
Learning Goals
The Next Generation Science Standard, Middle School Physical Science 1-1, will be addressed in this class.
*Atoms are the most basic unit of a chemical element.
*Atoms are made of protons (positive), neutrons (neutral), and electrons (negative).
*The protons and neutrons reside in the nucleus and the electrons reside outside the nucleus.
*The identity of an atom is determined by the number of protons in its nucleus.

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have a degree in chemistry from the University of Illinois and a master's in Science Education from the University of Iowa. I taught high school physics and chemistry for 3 years in Virginia. As a homeschooling parent, I taught several physical science and robotics classes for homeschool co-ops and coached a FIRST Lego League robotics team. I'm excited to share my discovery of PHET Simulations with students because it will allow them to naturally learn advanced concepts through exploration.
