Description
Class Experience
Students will learn the history of Africa which is not often taught in its entirety, including cultural knowledge like African Philosophy. Critical Thinking skills will be improved, as will Cultural Empathy.
I have a BA in both History and Philosophy and an MSc in Psychology. I have also tutored students in all three. I am African, and remain deeply embedded in the continent, with many family and friends all across it, allowing me to have a good current understanding on Africa. Racism is a topic we will discuss, especially around the topic of the colonization on Africa. This is an excellent resource for dealing with such a topic. https://www.redcross.org.uk/get-involved/teaching-resources/talking-with-children-and-young-people-about-race-and-racism. The topic of racism will be handled gently , with time for students to discuss how they feel on the matter.
Towards the end of the course, learners will be asked to write a short piece on what they have learnt from the course, and how they now view Africa.
55 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
- War, Colonization and Slavery are a part of the history of Africa and will be discussed. - The concept of race, both in the past and in the future will be addressed, with time for students to share their thoughts and perspectives on the matter.
