In this course we will be taking a deep dive into all things African. By taking this class, students will be immersed in the rich history of Africa, hopefully leading to a deep respect and understanding of the continent. We will learn about a variety of topics, from wealthy empires, to the beautiful environments of the continent. We will address colonization and slavery, in such a way to ensure that every student feels empowered to promote equality more generally in their lives Often African history is left out of Western Education, with references made only to the Ancient Egyptians, and Slavery, we see the effect of this in today's media representation of the continent, and in the racial disparities we see across the globe.

My teaching style is fun with substance, and an emphasis on students views and opinions. I'm interested in developing each students specific talents, and make sure their thoughts are heard and valued. This class will often utilize power points, short youtube clips and discussion. Class structure usually involves some form of information being presented, and then asking question on it to ascertain students understanding and thoughts. Options for Tiered Learning are always available, if a student would prefer to write their thoughts and questions, or express them creatively, this is always encouraged.

Below you will find the course schedule, although it may look academically challenging, it will be taught in a way that is very accessible; often through stories and first hand perspectives.

Week 1 - The Cradle of Human Kind - Looking at how life is thought to have began in Africa. There will also be a class discussion on how each student views Africa currently, e.g. what they have seen in the media. We will check on this regularly throughout the class, to see if perceptions have changed.

Week 2 - The Ecology of Africa - Looking at the different environments (Sahara, Congo Rain forest, Seas, etc.) Including the wild life in Africa.

Week 3 - Ancient African Civilizations (Kemet, Axom, Kush, Nubia, Egypt)

Week 4- The Middle Ages - ( Mali Empire & Mansa Musa, Great Zimbabwe)

Week 5 - Colonization and the Slave Trade (The scramble for Africa, up to independence) & Africa Today - Looking at both the beauty of the continent, the problems facing it, and the solutions.

An existing interest in discussion and other cultures is always useful!

I have a BA in both History and Philosophy and an MSc in Psychology. I have also tutored students in all three. I am African, and remain deeply embedded in the continent, with many family and friends all across it, allowing me to have a good current understanding on Africa. Racism is a topic we will discuss, especially around the topic of the colonization on Africa. This is an excellent resource for dealing with such a topic. https://www.redcross.org.uk/get-involved/teaching-resources/talking-with-children-and-young-people-about-race-and-racism. The topic of racism will be handled gently , with time for students to discuss how they feel on the matter.
