Algebraic Thinking With a Montessori Twist: Squaring 2 & 3 Digit Numbers
In each class, learners will use red, blue, and green colored pegs on the Montessori Algebraic Peg Board to create the squares of 2 or 3 digit numbers and gain a foundational understanding of binomials (a + b)² and trinomials (a + b + c)².

Once the multiplication facts are mostly internalized, elementary learners enjoy exploring the beauty of math in different ways. Doing squaring problems on the algebraic peg board doesn't just satisfy the aesthetic artful side of math for learners, it also lays down the cornerstones of understanding for the algebraic concepts of the binomial and trinomial. Learners can see how squaring numbers actually works and many begin to internalize this over time so that they can do these squares in...
Learners will practice: - multiplication facts through 9 X 9 - using the binomial format (a + b) squared = a squared + 2ab + b squared - using the trinomial format (a + b + c) squared = a squared + 2ab + 2ac + b squared + 2bc + c squared - speaking in mathematical terms and expressing themselves using the correct nomenclature - following directions in a multi-step process
I've taught pre-school and elementary school classes with hands-on math throughout my career. I love interacting with learners and making sure that their learning is meaningful!
