Class Experience

US Grade 8 - 9
Did you finish your last math course feeling like you just didn't "get" it? Or perhaps you need to brush up on concepts before end-of-course testing. Either way, a Burning Questions session is perfect for you!
In this one-time class, we will get to know slope as it relates to linear functions and how useful it can be in the real world. Here is an overview of what we'll explore:
Equations in slope-intercept form: we’ll deconstruct y = mx + b and examine the difference between the y-intercept (b) and slope (m)
The slope formula: we’ll look at what slope actually represents (the rate of change, or the change in y divided by the change in x) and how to generate it from a table of values
Graphs of linear functions: we will study several examples of linear functions graphed on the coordinate plane and talk about how to determine slope from a graphed function
Real-world examples: we’ll look at several examples of linear models in the form of word problems. This is where the rubber meets the road and you’ll put your new understanding to use!
All students will receive a guided notes file and “cheat sheet” which can be used in the regular math class or printed as a poster to keep concepts front of mind.
This class aligns with Common Core State Standards 8.F.A.2, 8.F.A.3, and 8.F.B.4.
