I love math! I love to teach math. To me, math is fun, but I know not everyone feels that way. I love to make it accessible and understandable to all types of learners. I have experience working with a wide variety of learners including English language learners, special education students, general education students, highly motivated and gifted students, and now my own children. I started teaching high school math over 14 years ago in a public-school setting until my eldest was born. Since then, I have continued to teach in various settings including public school, community college, individual tutoring, and small online classes, while homeschooling my children. I strive to meet students on their level, figuring out how they learn best, and adjusting my teaching to help them understand and be successful. One of my favorite parts of teaching has been working with small groups of students or one-on-one sessions where I can really get to know the student, their needs, and their learning style. I focus on helping students understand the "why" behind the work they do, and not just the "how". I want them to be critical thinkers, not just human calculators. I have been teaching through Outschool since August 2019 and I love the opportunities to help students gain confidence and be successful with math! The live online format of this class means your student will get to ask questions and receive specific feedback designed to help them succeed. With so many free video math resources available online, you may be wondering if a "live" class is really worth it. Many of the free resources are wonderful and can be helpful, but having an experienced teacher to explain the concepts, answer questions, and offer immediate feedback is truly invaluable. If your student struggles with math or has low confidence in their math ability, this class is a great format for them! Even if your student excels in math, the personal interaction available through the live classes is a great way for them to continue on their math journey! In addition to caring for, and homeschooling my four kids, my hobbies include reading, running, and completing house projects with my husband. Parents have said: "She is patient and easy to understand. She makes the kids feel relaxed during the lesson and makes sure they understand difficult concepts." -Mark "Excellence. Great tutor helping my daughter. Explains everything in a way where she understands." -Daniel "My son felt relieved after the first lesson! She explains things in a clear way and is very aware of the student's needs and strengths. I highly recommend Rachel." -Debbie "My son felt relieved after the first lesson! Weekly homework will be assigned and timely feedback given.
I will provide weekly note-taking guides and weekly practice pages. The student should be able to print, complete, scan, and send these PDF documents. They can also be completed on a tablet such as an iPad.
Students will also be expected to complete a quiz each week to assess mastery of the skills covered. A grade will be given at the end of the class if requested. Grades will be calculated based on 20% for homework and 80% for quizzes.
1 hour 30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
If your student has taken a first semester Algebra 2 course with someone else, please contact me to see if this class would be a good fit for him/her. Thanks!
