Note: In order to finish Quarters 3 and 4 by August, the sessions that start May and after will meet 3 times a week. Before taking this course, students should have taken Algebra Quarter 1, 2, and 3 or their equivalent. These quarters cover the following: multi-step equations, systems of equations, functions, exponent rules and factoring polynomials. Algebra 1 is the foundation to prepare for future high school math classes and should be taken with the intention to learn. This course will focus on the concepts and skills learned in the first quarter of Algebra 1. These concepts covered in this course include: Week 9 Multiplying rational expressions Week 10 Dividing rational expressions Week 11 Arithmetic operations on rational numbers: same denominators Week 12 Arithmetic operations on rational numbers: different denominators Week 13 Arithmetic operations on rational numbers: binomial denominators Week 14 Solving equations of rational expressions Week 15 Distance and midpoint formulas Week 16 Intro to quadratic equations Material will be presented through exploring concepts and discovering relationships between mathematical concepts. There will be examples, practice and exploration. Students will be given an example or exploration activity, then will work with the instructor to understand problems then they will solve problems on their own. The first ten minutes of every class will be set aside to address homework problems. Homework will be required but answer keys will be posted. Assessments will be used to track student progress. Please request a letter grade if required. Students should expect to spend 2 to 4 hours a week outside of class on homework.
