Class Experience

In this ongoing class, we will meet three times per week to cover the first major topics of Algebra 1. Students can also use this course as a review of certain topics they feel they need more help with and join at any time. Because of this, please be sure to check the schedule to make sure learners have the pre-requisite skills for the given week. Students will have a set of notes posted in the classroom before every session that they may print out before the current lesson. We will take guided notes and periodically practice new concepts throughout each lesson. Topics will cycle every six weeks, so check back if you miss the week your learner needs!

I teach by asking guiding questions that will lead students through problems and concepts. I also use these questions to constantly assess my students' understanding! Through this questioning method, I am better able to meet all of my students' needs and adjust my lessons to clear up any misconceptions they might be having. It is important for students to understand the "why" in mathematics. If students understand why we are doing a particular step, they can better remember and apply the skill in the future.

Algebra can be intimidating upon first glance, but if we can learn to approach tough problems with determination and perseverance, we can conquer even the toughest questions. I like to encourage my students to always try, even if they aren't exactly sure whether they are right or wrong. Sometimes, we learn the most when we make mistakes! Our brain is actually growing when this happens!
