Class Experience

***I am currently transitioning this to my ongoing Algebra class as I've found that more helpful for struggling learners you can find it here:
https://outschool.com/classes/algebra-1-ongoing-custom-planmentoringdaily-accountability-gSicbimH#usNkO7ExQL ***

We will go through a 1-week review session at the beginning to make sure students have the required background understanding that they need to succeed in Algebra. I find this is usually the biggest culprit for students hating math so if we can fix this missing background information then it goes a long way to helping. We will have about 10 minutes of explanation each class followed by 10 minutes of practice questions, then 10 more minutes of class and 10 more minutes of practice. That may be doubling down on the same material if need be or doing new material if they all get them right the first time.

After that we will spend 7-weeks going through the first 6 chapters of the "Algebra Demystified" book. This will include:

Chapter 1 - Fractions - Review of fraction arithmetic and learning new things about it.
Chapter 2 - Intro to Variables – Helping students learn what variables are and how they interact with other mathematics processes.
Chapter 3 – Decimals – Helping students learn where the decimal places are as well as how to do arithmetic with them.
Chapter 4 - Negative Numbers – Review of negative numbers and then learning how they interact with variables and other processes.
Chapter 5 - Exponents and Roots – Reviewing exponents and then how to deal with exponents on variables as well as how those interact with roots for the exponents.
Chapter 6 - Factoring and the Distributive Property – When dealing with exponents on variables we need to know how to use factoring and distribution to get those variables by themselves.

Homework will include questions assigned from Khan Academy for students depending on their needs. Learning progress will be evaluated by chapter tests and homework all from the book.

I really enjoy watching students change their attitudes towards Mathematics. I have had the pleasure of seeing dozens of students experience this change and I'm excited to help more!

Through a friendly low-pressure environment I try to help put students at ease and this helps them to take down their walls and be willing to learn.
