What's included

72 live meetings
60 in-class hours
Homework
1-2 hours per week. Homework is assigned per lesson in the format of a "Blooket" game. Also, students are encouraged (but not required) to complete all of the examples on the "notes" worksheet that we do not finish in class. Additionally, or in lieu of the game-style homework, homework worksheets are available by parent request. Moreover, the ***most*** important thing is that each student is putting forth daily effort inside and outside of the classroom.
Assignments
Section quizzes occur weekly in the format of a "Kahoot!" game. Students need to complete this quiz to assess mastery of the week's objective. Each quiz needs to be completed after the 2nd lesson for that week, and before the next week's lessons begin. Additionally, or in lieu of the game-style quizzes, quiz worksheets are available by parent request.
Certificate of Completion
1 after class completion

Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
General Info:
This course covers all major topics of Algebra 1, compared to the state standards assessed in most US frameworks. A new standard is taught every week, and I use a spiral review approach. Even though this is a "Fixed Length" course, students may enroll at any point based on their individual need. Whether your student needs a full curriculum, extra support on a particular topic for school or ACT / SAT test prep, or just needs a supplement for his/her current curriculum -- this course is a great fit!

Teaching Method:
I teach using the Gradual Release of Responsibility approach, where students are given an increasing level of responsibility to independently master the objective. For the problems we work in class, 1) I will demonstrate how the problem is to be correctly completed, 2) We will work a new problem together, then 3) the students will complete a problem independently, and present their work as I check for understanding.

Dates/Holidays:
This is a year-long course starting on August 4th, 2025 and concluding on May 15th, 2026. There will be holiday breaks during the following weeks:

10.06.2025 - 10.10.2025 | Fall Break
11.24.2025 - 11.28.2025 | Thanksgiving Break
12.22.2025 - 01.02.2026 | Christmas Break
03.09.2026 - 03.13.2026 | Spring Break

Weekly Routine:
The class meets live on 2 non-consecutive days per week (based on demand, there are Monday/Wednesday sections and Tuesday/Thursday Sections) allowing students a day in between lessons to complete homework and solidify their understanding, and a quiz on Friday to assess mastery of the week's objective(s).

Instructional Delivery:
Each lesson will take place over Zoom, and students will have a copy of the notes that will be taught onscreen. To best ensure the highest level of success, students are encouraged to have all notes printed out and ready for each lesson.

The structure of each live lesson is:
1) Recap (5-10min)
2) New Notes (25-30min)
3) Practice Time (15-20min)

Course Materials:
Course materials that I provide are -- notes, homework, assessments, and a certificate upon course completion. Notes will be available on the Outschool course page as printable .pdf files. Homework, quizzes, and tests will be posted on the course page as interactive gamified assessments: "Blooket" for homework and "Kahoot!" for quizzes. As an alternative, pdf versions of homework, assessments, and answer keys are also available at the parents' request.

Learning Goals

The students will master Algebraic manipulations by simplifying expressions using order of operations, absolute value, combining like terms, and the distributive property.
The students will solve and graph equations and inequalities including two-step, multi-step, absolute value, and literal equations, as well as compound and absolute value inequalities.

Learning Needs
This class is intentionally designed to support unique learning needs of all students, and especially considerate of students with ADHD. I use engagement strategies in class, and offer multiple modes of assessment outside of the classroom.
Pre-Requisites
Typically, learners should have completed 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Mathematics before taking this course. Advanced learners may be prepared for Algebra 1 without these 3 years of coursework.
Supply List
Recommended: Pencils, erasers, and the ability to print out worksheets. A TI-84 plus graphing calculator would be very handy, and useful for all future math classes and standardized tests -- however it is not exclusively "required". I will teach using the online Desmos calculator (students may use this also) and an onscreen version of the TI-84 plus.

This is my recommendation for students that wish to truly get the most out of this course. It is possible for students to complete worksheets, calculations, and activities all on the computer, but the burden would be on the student to make sure the needed technology is in place.
