Join this class and let your imagination step into Alaska while enjoying a tall tale about a totem pole that comes to life. Students will get to join in on the story fun by acting out different characters as the story is read. After the story time they will have the opportunity to participate in answering comprehension questions and forming and sharing opinions on this book. Three story based coloring pages are available for students to complete on their own after the class. Time structure: 5 minutes introductions & story time, expectations 5 minutes fiction, or non-fiction comparison, with student predictions of what type of story this will be and practicing acting out the following verbs: leapt, slapped, swooped, wriggled, howling, chattering, swayed, kerchooed 10 minutes story time 10 minutes: comprehension questions, group vote fiction or non-fiction?, student opinion sharing, coloring page example share.
Learning Goals
With support, students will be able to
1. Identify characters
2. Retell key details of a story
3. Answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how
4. Describe how characters in a story, play or poem respond to major events, problems, and challenges
5. Use illustrations and context clues to learn new words

Parental Guidance
Parental guidance might be necessary very young children so that they are safe while acting out different parts of the story. We don't want laptops ending up on the floor. :)

I have 5+ years experience in teaching K-8 and over 15 years teaching in all. I want to share my love of Alaska and reading books with children. My classes incorporate voice, acting and dramatic effects to encourage story comprehension and the pure fun factor of reading.
