The Alaska Studies and History course examines the rich history of Alaska’s geography and cultures. The course will examine its people from the early Native Alaskans (pre-contact) to Russian American (Fur Trade), territory to statehood, and the diverse progression into the present. The main goal of the class is to learn the history of Alaska from before the Russian Fur Trade area to the present. Our course will also examine the history of Native Alaskans. Our class goal will be to examine Alaska History through 5 key Historical Themes that provide a deeper understanding of the material, and to allow students the opportunity to apply their creativity and innovation in mastering various concepts of Alaska History. The 5 Historical Themes allow students the opportunity to provide their views and prospective in how we should understand our unique and diverse history. We will also experience how historians view primary and secondary sources to be able to explain history. Our Themes are: Cultural Interaction, Cultural Conflict, Role of Government, Role of the Environment, and Role of Attitudes.
