Class Experience

Students will learn how to make a Japanese meal of "Curry Rice" using a microwave. Students will learn about the popularity of curry rice in Japanese food culture.
Students are expected to prepare for class by having ready all supplies/ingredients on a workspace prior to class starting.
SUPPLIES/INGREDIENTS LIST: FOR THE CURRY RICE (1 serving): * Cooked white rice, approx. 1 cup- Medium or short grain, calrose, or sushi rice. Please have it cooked in advance. Pre-cooked, shelf-stable rice is also available for purchase, sample item here: * Frozen mixed vegetables (peas and carrots) * 1 Hot dog or sausage * Frozen tater tots * REQUIRED: Japanese Curry Sauce Mix - Mild spiciness recommended for children, sample item here: . This ingredient is required, as it will be difficult to make the curry sauce without this mix. * Optional: boiled egg, fresh parsley, and/or fukujinzuke (red pickled vegetables) - for garnish only, completely optional * Knife and cutting board - We will be cutting hot dogs * Microwave * Microwave safe bowl and mixing spoon * Measuring cups * Oven mitts or small towels for handling hot items * Plate or bowl, additional small bowl, spoon, paper towel or hand towel Thank you in advance for your support in preparing the necessary supplies and ingredients for this class. Some items may be difficult to source in your local area, so I recommend looking through the list well in advance to allow time for ordering online as needed. If you cannot source some ingredients, it's okay, please just pick the closest substitution. I understand the costs can add up, especially for a one-time class, but some Japanese condiments are staples, and are great to have on hand, and for upcoming Ai Sensei's Japanese Kitchen classes.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
50 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
NO-STOVE RECIPES: Recipes are meant to be kid-friendly and will not use a stove.
However, knives and microwaves will be used.

KNIVES: If preferred, a butter knife will work just fine, since we are only cutting hot dogs.

MICROWAVE: Please be available to help your child take out hot items from the microwave. This part can be especially dangerous if the microwave is located above the child's height.

ALLERGIES: Parents are responsible for checking all ingredients for any allergens applicable to your child. Some allergens included in this class's recipe may include, but not limited to: SOY, WHEAT, MILK.
