While many are concerned that AI (artificial intelligence) is disrupting industries, some of us teachers are embracing it and all the possibilities that come with this emerging technology. When utilized correctly, it can amplify learning and productivity, even on a daily basis. For instance, personalized assistants, generative imagery, and even fact-checking are just a few of the revolutionary uses made possible. As the young generation is met with endless possibilities, we must approach this tech responsibly. This class will teach students about AI capabilities from a lens promoting credibility. Some subjects we will talk about include technology, art, robotics, news, education, debate topics, and so much more (since this is an ongoing discussion group). From these various topics, we will learn how to interact with AI, vet information, and get the most out of smart tools without compromising the ability to think for ourselves. Here is a basic roadmap and structure for each class: • Warm-up • Topic of Discussion • Independent / Group Activity • Time to ask AI • Conclusion (extend) Since this class is designed for proficient to advanced elementary / middle school students optimal class size is generally six (6) learners, but it can accommodate more. The topics and themes may also be adjusted to students who may be intermediate level. This enrichment course/club will meet once a week, every week. Here is a tentative, example list of topics and themes per session: • Week of July 8th, 2024: "What are new careers for younger generations?" • Week of July 15th, 2024: "Where are the optimal destinations for family vacations?" • Week of July 22nd, 2024: "Which foods have the highest nutritional value?" • Week of July 29th, 2024: "How can we preserve nature?"

When using some of the third-party AI platforms, separate accounts are not required for students and parents. This is because the platforms that will be primarily utilized are free (i.e. ChatGPT on OpenAI and Gemini from Google). The instructor will ask AI general and broad questions during class (which will be vetted beforehand). Furthermore, the settings for the responses will be calibrated to be child-friendly, thought-provoking, educational, and informative. As for the approved resources, the same applies in that separate accounts will not be required beforehand.

Hello, I'm Hyung-Gwan from both the United States of America and South Korea! I am an American citizen but I am also very much in touch with my Korean roots. I initially started off as a consultant after completing my Master's program at Carnegie Mellon University (Heinz College). However, after a few years working in the industry, I discovered a passion for teaching that was unparalleled. Much like both of my parents who are veteran educators, I realized my calling and passion for education. A little more about me than just my career: I enjoy watching films, being active outdoors, and trying new hobbies. I look forward to working with you (let's study hard)! ^^
