Class Experience

Students will walk away from class with a better understanding of how to avoid strangers, why it is important to avoid strangers, and what to do if a stranger approaches.
I have a Master's of Social Work degree with a concentration in Community Organizing. I have a Bachelors of Science degree with a major in Human Development and Family Studies. I hold certificates in child youth and family services, diversity, leadership, and conflict resolution. I have over 5 years paid experience working with children online and in person. Previously, I've taught my nieces and nephews safety, awareness, people smarts, and stranger danger. I am currently teaching my 4 year old this topic.
No homework or prior experience is required for this class. After class, I will post notes about what we discussed and additional safety information and resources. I highly encourage parents/caregivers to go over this information again because children need to hear it several times. I encourage all students to learn their address and phone number in case of an emergency. It is easier to retain information if it is sung like a song. I also encourage students and caregivers to create a code word in case of an emergency and someone else will pick them up from school. This lets the child know it is safe to go with that person.
No other apps, websites, or supplies are needed for this class. I will include notes and additional resources after class. This material is for your own benefit. Nothing is required to be printed out.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
There is no formal assessment. At the end of learners will have the chance to role play and practice how to respond in different situations.
30 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
This is a class about safety. We are going to role play and act out different scenarios. Class may sound loud, so students should not take it in the same room as someone sleeping. We will discuss safety measures such as learning their address and phone number in case of emergency. We will discuss creating a code word in case someone needs to pick them up from school in case of an emergency. Parents/ caregivers will need to do this with the learner at your own convenience.
I will post notes and additional resources after class. Some of the sources I used include but is not limited to the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and
