NOTE: A shorter version of this class is available for younger students and for those not comfortable with using scissors: https://outschool.com/classes/clothed-in-pride-the-legend-of-ghanas-kente-cloth-K1KYTwf0?usid=1vIvjZtr&signup=true&utm_campaign=share_activity_link With its eye-catching designs and words of wisdom woven into every section of the cloth, Kente has become a symbol of pride in African heritage. It embodies a cultural identity that is recognizable around the world. In this multi-day class, students will learn about the rich history of the Kente cloth and complete an art project using papers and other basic supplies. This project is an excellent way for learners to exercise their fine motor skills while strengthening their concept of patterns. The class is very engaging, informative, and will be delivered through slideshows, pictures, videos. Below is a breakdown of a daily schedule. Class 1: This class will begin with a brief discussion on traditional clothing around the world and its importance. I will give a historical background of the Kente cloth. Students will learn where it originates and be able to locate it geographically. Your learner will enjoy listening to the fascinating story of the cloth as I retell it. We will learn about its features, uses, and how it is made by the master weavers in the weaving village of Bonwire. Class 2: We will create and design our Kente masterpieces using cardstock and other supplies. I will guide students through a step-by-step demonstration. Students will be able to ask questions and interact as we complete our craft. The class will then conclude with our version of a Kente ceremony, themed "What Does Your Kente Say?" This is an opportunity for students to share their woven masterpiece with the class, reveal its unique name and meaning behind their paper cloth. I usually encourage all students to participate in this since it is so much fun to do. It's also fine if your learner feels uncomfortable sharing. Listen to others tell their stories, and be inspired. Please understand that class time is approximate. It may run some minutes overtime or end some minutes early depending on learner participation and enrollment. See you in the classroom!
