Students will hear the true and inspirational story of Elizabeth Freeman (also known as Mumbet), who was enslaved in Massachusetts. She later became the first enslaved African American women to successfully sue for her freedom, after hearing the words of the new US Constitution. After the story, students will discuss briefly what a grievance is and use a template to create their own Declaration of Independence document. We will then share our declarations, grievances, and proposed resolutions with the class. This is a gentle activity.
Learning Goals
Students will learn about a great African American who dared to stand up for herself and won her freedom in the court system.
Students will understand the formatting of the Declaration of Independence- Using a template they will state their grievance, give 2-3 reasons for the grievance, and finally list a proposed resolution to the grievance. Students will then share their declarations with the class.
