African American Stories: Katherine Johnson and Sudoku Puzzles

Students will listen to a story about Katherine Johnson, a gifted mathematician who worked for NASA. Students will then be introduced to sudoku puzzles, with multiple levels. They too will become mathematicians.

Class Experience

Students will listen to the true story of gifted mathematician Katherine Johnson and her life as a child and as a human computer at NASA. We will cover lightly the topics of barriers such as race and gender that she faced. Students will then be introduced to soduko puzzles and we will work through a few as a group.

Learning Goals

1.Students will hear the true story of an American heroine.
2. Students will learn critical thinking/mathematical skills/reasoning by playing with sudoku puzzles.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Younger students may need some assistance with the sudoku puzzles. Reading is not needed, and we will offer various levels of puzzles, including picture based.
Supply List
A print out of multiple level sudoku boards will be placed inside classroom.  No reading skills needed. Easiest level will be using visual pictures.

External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
