African American Stories: Inventor Sarah Jacobs & Invention/Patent Activity
Class experience
In this class, students will meet and hear the true story of Sarah Elisabeth Jacobs Goode. She became the first African American woman to obtain a patent in 1886, for her invention, the cabinet bed. After hearing Sarah's story, the students will be given a "challenge" in which they must become inventors and sketch out a solution to a common problem. An example could be "create a machine that would help collect plastic trash from the oceans" or "create a tool that would allow us to eat hot...

I am a licensed K-12 educator with years experience teaching social studies. I teach a lot of classes about African and African-American history currently on Outschool as well as in-person homeschool cooperatives. I also serve as Direction of Racial Justice for a large national non-profit.

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
The topic of slavery does come up however most of the story takes place as a Free Black woman and focuses on her invention and path towards getting a patent.
