US Grade 2 - 5
Mary McLeod Bethune was one of America's most inspirational civil rights activists. She pushed for black advancement, women rights, and ensured rights to education for all. Bethune was the founder of the now Bethune-Cookman University. She opened up the doors to giving African-Americans formal educational opportunities. In this class, students will learn about the life of Mary McLeod Bethune and the major contributions she made to education for people of color. First, students will learn about her early life and the challenges she faced growing up. Next, we will discuss how she overcame racism and pushed for equality for African Americans years before the Civil Rights Movement. Students will learn about her impact on society and how she challenged systematic racism in education. By the end of class, students will understand why Mary McLeod Bethune is an important historical figure and why her story should be known to all. She showed America that black people are capable of learning and success. I allow students to ask questions and discuss this thoughts, with that being said class may SOMETIMES go over 5 mins. Every student deserves a chance to speak :) If you have a specific time/day that isn't listed on my schedule please let me know. I can add classes that best fits your needs (as long as I have availability)

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree from University of North Florida
As an ESL Teacher and Tutor, I have taught classes on African American history, American Figures, and the civil rights movement for over 4 years. I have experience in teaching this subject to students in elementary, middle, and high school. I also have experience tutoring college students. I have a degree in Communications, so I will be able to communicate and teach this topic without being bias. I was able to research, write essays, and give speeches about this topic throughout college. I was trained by professionals to understand history and the issues surrounding history. I have taken many African American courses and surrounding black history. Most importantly, I will allow each student to express their thoughts and opinions about this topic. This will help them communicate and show what they have learned. It is very important to include all students. As an experience teacher, I understand how to remain non-bias, and how to let students express and talk about how they feel concerning these topics.
