Class Experience

Learn basic and advanced art skills in this 4-week art class, where we will use pencil, charcoal and ink (pen) to learn critical art skills including shading, perspective, composition and observation.

Week 1: One-point perspective. Draw a row of buildings and trees using a ruler and pencil. Use charcoal pencils for shading.

Week 2: Realistic eye. Practice detail work with a variety of pencils. For best results have a set of pencils with different hardness levels, white colored pencil and kneaded eraser.

Week 3: Shading with pen. Draw an animal (example will be an octopus) using a micron pen. Shading technique is cross-hatching and pointillism.

Week 4: Shading shapes with charcoal. This advanced study of light and composition will require still life models (such as cups, jars and boxes), blending tools and charcoal, and can be practiced with oil pastels as well (optional).

My art classes are encouraging and focus on self-expression and growth. There is no pressure for drawings to be completed on time or in any exact manner. My classroom is inclusive of all abilities and I am happy to accommodate special needs upon request. Let's have fun and create some amazing art together!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Welcome to Outschool! My name is Ms. Astrid and I am an unschooling mom of three and passionate home educator. I have been teaching online classes on Outschool and independently since 2017. Besides teaching kids online, I am also a local homeschool co-op leader here in NW Arkansas (USA).

Since 2012 I have owned my own artisan craft business. I am a professional dye artist, painter and seamstress, and have an extensive local and online fan base of people who follow my work. I administrate DIY help forums and manage a blog with tutorials. I have instructed children and adults online all around the world, and continue to offer local classes and workshops in my community under my private school name: Mossflower Academy.

I have always been very passionate about literature, art and art history, particularly the study of modern art movements of the 20th century. Many of my classes feature a mix of classical, contemporary and Indigenous artists and techniques that expose young artists to new art styles and ideas. I believe that every child is an artist in their own way, and that by exposing them to different art styles and mediums, they can find their own way to create!

My teaching style is very much influenced by my experience as an unschooling parent; I believe children are natural learners and that our classroom is a shared space where we can openly and respectfully exchange ideas and opinions. I focus on empowering my learners by finding and exploring their passions. In my classroom we are free to mute/unmute when necessary, and I am comfortable interacting with learners off-screen if they prefer not to stay on camera after they have been verified. My classes are inclusive and I enjoy the diverse Outschool learner community; I welcome the chance to meet children of all abilities and strive to meet the needs of neurodivergent children.

I look forward to the opportunity of meeting your learners and sharing my passion for learning with them!
