Class Experience

This is a "Summer Camp" class, which meets several days in a row. In each lesson, we'll tell a fable or classic folk tale together with lots of student participation and acting-out together. Then, our young artists will follow along with a guided drawing, and we'll finish our artworks with watercolor painting.

Teacher-led demonstrations will provide step-by-step instructions to demonstrate basic art skills, but students are encouraged to use their imagination and add their own details to make their paintings unique!
Art skills that will be practiced include: using shapes to draw characters, making a background, adding textures, and showing foreground & background. We'll draw animals, people, buildings-- whatever the story might require!

Our syllabus for summer 2023:
Lesson 1: The Lion & the Mouse (from Aesop's Fables)
Lesson 2: The Three Billy Goats Gruff (a Norwegian folktale)
Lesson 3: The Curse of the Chameleon (a Zulu folktale)
Lesson 4: The Tortoise & the Hare (from Aesop's Fables)

Learning Goals

Students will learn and practice basics of drawing and painting such as: caring for your paintbrush, color mixing, how to use paints, blending colors, drawing animals, drawing people, overlapping, drawing patterns & textures, making your artwork look 3D, and more.

I have been a classroom teacher for students young and old for many years, and I love inventing fun projects for my artists-in-training! This is a variation on a class suggested by my 4-year-old niece. She loved taking art classes, but couldn't find a class in that would allow her to paint, which is all she really wanted to do! This class is for creative young artists who want to experiment with different art materials, but also want a little guidance to make beautiful artworks.
