Class Experience

This class is part of a series of patriotic classes exploring American Symbols. Students will join our mascot, Bella Bear, to discover the history of the Statue of Liberty. The class will begin with learning a song in American Sign Language. I will read excerpts of books and use questioning techniques and discussion to interact with students. Students will make a quick snack and have the opportunity to do two art projects they may share with the class. They will draw, write, or tell one fact they learned. This class will be informative, engaging, and supportive in a joyful, non-partisan environment. Cameras will need to remain on throughout the class to facilitate interaction with each other and with me, and to allow me to assist in the students' sign language acquisition.

Learning Goals

Students will learn:
* The history of the Statue of Liberty

My excitement about American symbols began with travels to Washington, DC. I loved stepping onto the exact spot Martin Luther King Jr. stood for his iconic I Have a Dream speech on the steps on the Lincoln Memorial. Walking through the White House thrilled me as I imagined the historic individuals who had walked its halls. I have enthusiastically taught many first graders about Washington, DC through books, music, and plays. I'm so excited to share American symbols with Outschool students!
