IEW Adventures in Writing Part One: Syllabus Course Description: In Adventures in Writing, students will explore a wide variety of fascinating subjects while learning to write using the Structure and Style® writing method. Through themes like Roman hoplites, tornadoes, and Leif Eriksson, students will develop their writing skills in an engaging and adventurous context. Required Textbook and Materials: • Adventures in Writing Student Book • 3-ring binder • File folders • Envelopes or ziplock bags for vocabulary cards Course Structure: Each week, students will: • Watch a video related to the theme of the week • Learn and review vocabulary words • Incorporate stylistic techniques such as -ly adverbs, who-which clauses, strong verbs, because clauses, quality adjectives, adverbial clauses, and sentence openers • Use fun videos and songs to learn grammar concepts Weekly Breakdown: Week 1 - Unit 1: Note Making and Outlines - Lesson 1: Nile River, Yangtze River Week 2 - Lesson 2: Roman Hoplite, American Quarter Horse Week 3 - Lesson 3: Orchestra and Conductor Week 4 - Unit 2: Writing from Notes - Lesson 4: Roman Colosseum Week 5 - Lesson 5: Tornadoes, -ly adverbs Week 6 - Lesson 6: Benjamin Franklin's Lightning Rod Week 7 - Lesson 7: Hannibal's War, who/which clauses Week 8 - Unit 3: Retelling Narrative Stories - Lesson 8: The Fox and the Crow, Part 1 Week 9 - Lesson 9: The Fox and the Crow, Part 2 Homework: • Homework assignments will be given each week from the student book. • Assignments should be completed and uploaded to the classroom before the next class. ________________________________________ This syllabus provides a structured yet engaging approach to developing writing skills through the IEW method, ensuring students remain motivated and interested through varied and adventurous themes.
Learning Goals
Moving through Units 1–7 of the IEW methods, students will take notes, summarize narrative stories, write from pictures, put together a mini research report, and compose creative essays, games, vocabulary, and more.
