What will be taught? This is a fun but informative class for most ages. We explore all areas of psychology, what it is, how our brains work, how psychology works in different settings, by the end of the course, students will assess a character that we choose as part of the class project and use what we learned to psychoanalyze that characters. They tend to be characters from history or pop culture. What topics will you cover & course structure: Week 1: Definition of psychology and contributors Week 2: Origins of Psychology in early Greek philosophy Week 3: Goals of psychology- describe, predict, understand, explain Week 4: Early historical perspectives: Structuralism, Functionalism, Gestalt, Behaviorism, & Psychoanalysis Week 5: Freud, Jung and the Greeks on Psychology Week 6: Different Views and Approaches LEARNING OBJECTIVES 1.1a: Use basic psychological terminology, concepts, and theories in psychology to explain behavior and mental processes 1.1b: Explain why psychology is a science with the primary objectives of describing, understanding, predicting, and controlling behavior and mental processes 1.2a: Identify key characteristics of major content domains in psychology (e.g., cognition and learning, developmental, biological, and sociocultural) 1.2c: Recognize major historical events, theoretical perspectives, and figures in psychology and their link to trends in contemporary research 2.2b: Describe what kinds of additional information beyond personal experience are acceptable in developing behavioral explanations MOVIE LIST INSIDE OUT (Pixar), Rating: G (for General Audience) CHICKEN LITTLE, Rating G PANTS ON FIRE, Rating G (Netflix) How is your class structured? The class will include pre-vetted introductory curriculum-based videos, interactive games for reinforcement, and opportunities to use the psychology skills in real-time. We will use cases: Like using psychology to analyze literary characters (i.e. what does psychology say about Snow White and etc.). It will be fun, informative and interactive. How will you teach? I will be creating a course that is highly interactive. It will include the use of psychology-related videos and clips.I will tailor the learning styles to the students. I will be using visual and zoom prompts to create a safe but fun environment for students to learn and build trust as a team. What's your teaching style? I teach to the student's learning style. I teach with an interactive, encouraging and uplifting style that is about allowing the student to explore the elements and psychology and build team trust. How much will learners get to interact with you and each other (mention specifics like lecture, games, slides, video clips, discussion)? This course will include interaction with vetted movie clips, relevant to the age group. Reading open-source content clips and interacting with slides. Any required experience or knowledge learners need? This course will be introductory, so no prerequisites needed. Nof their own. So most of you will be starting off on the same foot and learning the same things about improv together. Occasionally, you’ll have someone in your course who has taken improv classes before, or who has some stage experience.
