Class Experience

NOTE: THERE IS A 4-STUDENT REQUIREMENT

What will be taught?

This is a fun but informative class for most ages. We explore all areas of improv, how to do improv, terms within improv, and will also produce a zoom improv show an end to the class! While improv is a “team sport” it still relies on each individual bringing something of themselves to the table. Improv tends to challenge people in ways that are unique to them. For someone who is already outgoing and talkative, improv might challenge them to learn to give space to others. For someone who struggles with confidence in group settings, improv might challenge them to take bold steps and to speak up more often. It truly is the rare student who goes through an improv class and doesn’t feel like they learned anything about the art form or themselves.

What topics will you cover & course structure:

Intro to Improv
Character & Relationship
Patterns & Games
 Long-Form Performance
Teachers Best Practices
Short Form Improv
Improv on Stage
Class Presentations

How is your class structured?
Like many theater or performance classes, you’ll move around quite a bit in your improv class. In fact, there will be lots of jumping in, feet first, and doing. If you’re very shy or haven’t done much public speaking or stage work, this might feel intimidating or awkward at first. But we promise that you’ll quickly get used to the “jump right in” mentality of your improv classes (and it’s a lot more fun than how adults are typically expected to learn).

There will be a physical aspect to this course, that will require kids to move around, even while on Zoom. So a safe space is important.

How will you teach?
I will be creating a course that is highly interactive. It will include the use of Improv-related videos and clips.I will tailor the learning styles to the students. I will be using visual and zoom prompts to create a safe but fun environment for students to learn and build trust as a team.

What's your teaching style?
I teach to the student's learning style. Since improv is a very hands-on, I teach with an interactive, encouraging and uplifting style that is about allowing the student to explore the elements and philosophy of improv and build team trust.

How much will learners get to interact with you and each other (mention specifics like lecture, games, slides, video clips, discussion)? I will be improv-ing with students at the time to set an example of what is expected. I will occasionally lecture, but this is mainly interactive, so will be stepping back while overseeing the class interaction. We will use loads of improv games, occasional slides, and video clips to promote discussion for the history section.
