This course is for intermediate to advanced students who have taken at least one other filmmaking course. Our focus will be on creating beautiful images within the frame to enhance the stories our movies tell. Students should be familiar with the basic shots (Long, Medium, Close, etc.) We will explore the fundamentals of Cinematography through lecture and active learning opportunities. Each week students will be asked to demonstrate the skills they learn by shooting a scene from a short script. Students will produce one short film by combining the scenes we shoot to end up with a stylish and beautiful short. #creative Week 1: *Glow - Understanding when to use overexposure *Shadows- Don’t be afraid of the dark *Share and Discuss Week 2: *Texture: How diffusion adds to the frame *Color: Adding a Mood *Share and Discuss Each week students will participate in a class discussion and activities as well as complete the weekly assignment as we build toward the final scene. Our sessions will be working sessions. Tools and supplies will be needed during class time. Each week’s assignment will be combined to create one cohesive whole. Video production requires that we stick to our deadlines. Often in production it is more important to complete the project and move forward than it is to attempt perfection. ******Firearms and other props: Please be aware no firearms or other weapons should be used in projects for this course. Film and video production shoots can be dangerous. Work safely in all situations and always think before you act. Please do not place yourself or others in harmful situations in an effort to get a “cool shot.” Supplies: *Camera capable of recording video. *Tripod. *Video editing software. *Ability to capture sound. *Color light bulb *Scrap of sheer fabric for diffusion You could theoretically complete this entire course with an iPhone and a tripod. No need to purchase specialty equipment (beyond the tripod and color bulb). Photo by Kyle Loftus from Pexels
