In this ELA class, students will learn about sentence structure, grammar & editing, sentence combining, & writing with variety using different types of phrases & sentences, ending the course with a culminating argumentative essay.

Students will...
1. Students will improve their understanding of absolute, appositive, and participle phrases.
2. Students will write absolute, appositive, and participle phrases with correct punctuation.
3. Students will use phrases to incorporate variety into their writing.
4. Improve their understanding of simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences.
5. Identify the differences between dependent vs. independent clauses.
6. Identify the difference between clauses and phrases.
7. Write simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences with correct punctuation.
8. Use different sentence structures to incorporate variety into their writing.
9. Identify and demonstrate the basic components of an essay.
10. Effectively write and revise a multi-paragraph essay.
I have a B.S. in English Education and English Literature with over ten years of classroom teaching experience.
Homework Offered
Optional extra practice activities will be provided during class and/or on the Outschool classroom. Students may choose to use time outside of class to work on these. During the last two weeks of the course, students will write and revise a multi-paragraph essay, which may require 1-2 hours outside of class time.

Assessments Offered
The teacher will provide individualized feedback during class. Students will compose and revise an essay during the last two weeks of the course. The teacher will provide feedback during and after students' essay submission(s).

We will be using the online program Kahoot to review skills learned. Students may complete the Kahoot activities without signing up for an account. It is free, and students should use their first name only when joining the review game.
