Follows Teacher-Created Curriculum
*Prior knowledge is required before taking this course!* Students must know the basics of sentence diagramming. Students must have an understanding of how to set up a sentence diagram. They must know how to diagram modifiers, such as adjectives, adverbs, and prepositional phrases. Students should understand predicate adjectives, predicate adverbs, direct objects, and indirect objects. If students have taken my first sentence diagramming course, they are ready for this one! This course is all...

Unit 1Introduction / MiscellaneousIntroduction / Miscellaneous5 lessons3 WeeksWeek 1Lesson 1Diagramming Basics ReviewIn this first lesson, students will review diagramming the basics. The lesson will overview everything from Beginner Sentence Diagramming: subjects, linking verbs, transitive verbs, intransitive verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositional phrases, coordinating conjunctions, and compound parts. This single lesson is NOT enough for students to feel confident about diagramming all of these parts of speech. This is simply meant as a reminder of the things they should already know.Lesson 2Interrogative and Imperative SentencesThis lesson will cover interrogative and imperative sentences. There are four types of sentences, but declarative and exclamatory sentences are very straightforward. Students will learn how to diagram interrogative sentences by ensuring that the subject comes first in the sentence before they attempt to diagram. Students will learn about the implied "You" of imperative sentences. They will practice diagramming both.Week 2Lesson 3Interjections and Nouns of Direct AddressIn this lesson, students will learn about the very last part of speech that I haven't covered in other diagramming courses- interjections! Interjections and nouns of direct address are diagrammed the same because neither is grammatically related to the rest of the sentence. Students will practice adding this new technique into their diagrams.Lesson 4Passive and Active VerbsThis lesson will cover the difference between active and passive verbs. Writing instructors often ask students to use active voice in their writing, but many students don't understand what exactly that means! Seeing the difference in active vs passive verbs will help students identify and use active voice. Students will practice diagramming passive and active voice sentences.Week 3Lesson 5Passive vs. Active Voice in WritingNow that students understand the mechanics behind active and passive verbs, they can learn why active voice is so much more effective in their writing! Students will practice writing using active voice. This is the end of unit 1. I will post a quiz for students to try once they have completed this lesson.Unit 2ClausesClauses3 lessons2 WeeksWeek 3Lesson 6Adverb ClausesThis lesson will introduce independent and dependent clauses. The first dependent clause that students will learn to diagram is the adverb clause. An adverb clause is a piece of a sentence with a subject and a verb that works to modify the independent clause. It is essential to know about dependent and independent clauses to understand complex sentences, so I will introduce complex sentences in this lesson as well.Week 4Lesson 7Adjective ClausesThe second dependent clause that students will learn to diagram is the adjective clause. An adjective clause is a piece of a sentence with a subject and a verb that works to modify a noun in the independent clause. Students will practice diagramming sentences with adjective clauses.Lesson 8Noun ClausesThe final dependent clause that students will learn to diagram is the noun clause. These are a bit trickier because students will have to identify how the noun clause is functioning in order to diagram it in the correct spot. This lesson will challenge students to identify the noun clause function and diagram the noun clause correctly. This is the end of unit 2. I will post a quiz for students to try once they have completed this lesson.Unit 3Important Writing RulesImportant Writing Rules2 lessons1 WeekWeek 5Lesson 9Using Different Sentence TypesThis lesson will cover one of the best ways to improve readability and reduce monotony in students' writing- varying sentence types! Students will learn about the importance of intentionally using simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences within their writing.Lesson 10Subject vs. Object PronounsThis lesson is all about subject and object pronouns. We will cover one of the biggest questions people tend to have about grammar: When do I use "who," and when do I use "whom?" Now that students know about subjects and objects, this should actually be quite easy to understand! This is the end of unit 3. I will post a quiz for students to try once they have completed this lesson.Unit 4VerbalsVerbals3 lessons2 WeeksWeek 6Lesson 11GerundsThis lesson will introduce verbals. Verbals are tricky because they are words that look like verbs but act like other parts of speech! Gerunds act like nouns. Students will again need to identify how the noun is functioning in a sentence in order for them to diagram it correctly. Students will practice identifying noun functions and diagramming sentences with gerunds.Lesson 12ParticiplesThis lesson will recap verbals before defining participles. A participle is a verbal that acts like an adjective. Students will have to identify the participle and the thing it modifies in order to diagram it correctly. Students will practice diagramming sentences with participles.Week 7Lesson 13InfinitivesThe final verbal that students will learn about is an infinitive. Infinitives are easy to identify because they consist of the word "to" + a verb. However, it is tricky to determine if the infinitive is functioning as an adverb, adjective, or noun. Students will practice identifying infinitives, determining their functions, and diagramming them. This is the end of unit 4. I will post a quiz for students to try once they have completed this lesson.Unit 5Wrap UPWrap UP3 lessons2 WeeksWeek 7Lesson 14Lesser Known TechniquesThis lesson will cover some of the lesser known diagramming techniques. Students will learn about things like appositive phrases, absolute phrases, contracted verbs, and prepositional phrase modifiers.Week 8Lesson 15Diagramming ReviewIn this lesson, students will practice diagramming everything that they have learned so far! They will review the techniques and skills that they worked on throughout the course. I will provide challenge sentences for students to attempt.Lesson 16Writing ReviewFinally, students will review the writing rules that this course covered. Comma placement, active voice, and varying sentence types are a few of the things that we will review in this lesson. Students will be challenged to write a paragraph that demonstrates their knowledge of all writing rules. This is the end of unit 5. Students can submit their paragraph and challenge sentences from the previous lesson for review.
- Students will learn how to diagram: - interjections - nouns of direct address - questions - implied "you" - passive verbs - adverb, adjective, and noun clauses - verbals Students will learn how to enhance their academic and creative writing through knowledge of sentence types and structure.
