Advanced Level
"Advanced SAT Prep" is an ongoing class that students can join at any time to fine-tune their skills for the SAT. This class is specifically designed for students who are already high achievers and want to push themselves to earn an extremely competitive score. We will focus on techniques to achieve near-perfect accuracy on the easier questions and creative problem solving for the most challenging questions the SAT has to offer. Who should sign up: This advanced class is most appropriate for students who have already taken a practice digital SAT and have scored above 1300. You can take a practice SAT by downloading the Bluebook App from the CollegeBoard’s website. If you want to work on your SAT score but aren't quite at this level yet, I strongly recommend taking my "Prepare for the Digital SAT" for a few weeks before moving to the advanced class. How it works: This is an ongoing class, so you can show up at any time and get right to work. Classes will be offered weekly, and the more classes you can attend, the more your score will go up. Each class will start with a warm welcome to all students, both old and new, and a quick warm-up activity. Next, students who were in class the previous week will have a chance to ask any questions about the homework. The remainder of the class will be dedicated to building skills in one specific area covered by the SAT, with a big emphasis on the most challenging questions you’ll see during test day. Tentative Schedule for 2024: Week 1 – Introduction to the digital SAT Week 2 – Central Idea, Main Purpose, and Supporting Detail Questions Week 3 – Percentages and Exponential Growth and Decay Week 4 – Sentence Completion Questions with challenging vocabulary Week 5 – Punctuating the Boundaries Between Clauses Week 6 – Rates and Ratios, Conversions Between Linear and Square Units Week 7 – Categorizing Transition Words Week 8 – Command of Evidence Week 9 – Exponents & Roots Week 10 – Subject-Verb Agreement, Simple and Perfect Tenses Week 11 – Desmos skills / Transformations Week 12 – Quadratic and Higher-order Equations Week 13 – Rhetorical Synthesis & Cross-Text Connections Week 14 – SOHCAHTOA and Other Trig Concepts The weekly homework assignments will be from a practice SAT, which has all the topics mixed together. The teacher will sometimes take a second week on a topic or add new topics in response to the students’ needs and curiosity. Materials: Students won't need to purchase any materials for this class. In-class activities will consist of practice problems and other activities created by the teacher. Homework will come from the practice tests made available for free by the College Board. About the Teacher: Passionate about helping her students achieve their college dreams by being their coach and cheerleader as they prep for the SAT and ACT, Heather Krey is an experienced instructor with teaching certificates in math, physics, chemistry, and English. She knows the best tips and strategies for these tests – and she also understands that students need encouragement and practice to do their best. With dual bachelor's degrees in industrial engineering and psychology from Lehigh University, she also holds masters of education degrees in mathematics from DeSales University and in teaching from Kutztown University. She is a test prep author and a founding member of the National Test Prep Association. Ms. Krey lives in Allentown, PA, with her husband and three children. The rest of class time will be spent learning new test-taking strategies and building skills in math, grammar, and vocabulary.
