Intermediate - Advanced Level
How do we navigate social relationships? Why are we friends with some people, yet struggle making connections with others? Is it easy to make friends online? We will answer all these (and more!) in this class. Interpersonal relationships are studied by all types of psychologists. We will work on understanding social relationships from neurological, social, cultural, and clinical points of view. Each week will have a theme. I will discuss current psychological research (see sources) and use real-life examples to explain theories. Week of September 23rd: What communication strategies are best in relationships? Week of September 30th: Can you make friends online? Let's discuss the role of technology in relationships. Week of October 7th: Is social media good or bad for relationships? Week of October 14th: How do friends handle stressful situations? Week of October 21st: What types of conflict occur in friendships? How can we solve conflicts? Week of October 28th: Does a person's belief systems & values impact friendships? Week of November 4th: Do some people have trouble forming relationships? Let's discuss disorders related to interpersonal difficulties. Week of November 11th: Can you be friends with a narcissistic? Week of November 18th: The role of bullying in friendships. Week of November 25th: Do friends make riskier decisions together or alone? Week of December 2nd: Friends & schoolwork: Is there a relationship? Week of December 9th: How do friendships change as we get older? Week of December 16th: Working together or alone? The role of friendships in setting goals.
Learning Goals
Students will learn about interpersonal relationships from different scientific perspectives and practice critical thinking skills by discussing research.
