In this 5-week class learners will use their polynomial factoring skills to factor challenging polynomials! Please read the description carefully for required prerequisite knowledge. Class will meet once per week, with brief homework assignments between classes to solidify understanding. Classes will center examples, group discussion, and practice at different levels of difficulty. Learners will be encouraged to participate in discussions during and outside of class time by asking and...
Students will learn how to factor polynomial expressions using multiple steps. They will learn or review factorization techniques including greatest common factor, quadratic patterns, grouping, difference of squares, difference and sum of cubes, and the rational roots theorem. They will develop strategies for problems that require multiple techniques.
A few problems will be assigned each week for learners to complete independently. I estimate that will take take approximately 30-60 minutes each week. Homework problems are due 2 days before the next class. Challenge problems may be posted on the discussion board once or twice per week - learners are encouraged (but not required) to work on the challenge problems together on the discussion board.
Learners will need a way to take notes during class session. For assignments, they will need to upload pictures of handwritten work or type their answers. Some students may also find it helpful to have a calculator (if you do not already have one that you like, I recommend the Desmos scientific calculator, which you can access for free online or as an app).
All students will receive feedback on weekly homework, and written feedback on their progress at the end of the course. I can also provide a letter grade upon request (must be requested before the first class, and may require an extra assignment at the end of the course).
1 hour 15 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
