Music Theory & Tonal Harmony for the Advanced Musician

This twice a week course is designed for students who already have an intermediate understanding of music theory and want to deepen their knowledge of music theory and harmony.

Homework
1-2 hours per week. Homework will be assigned each week to reinforce what was taught in class. If students have any questions about the assignment please email me. We will go over all assignments in class.
Grading
I do grade the homework assignments. Final grades are offered, upon request. Letter grades are calculated based on a percentage taken from homework assessments and final project. A certificate of completion will be available, upon request.

Class Experience

This Advanced Music Theory and Harmony course is designed for the student who has already mastered the skills presented in Beginning Music Theory and Intermediate Music Theory. We will explore intervals, chords, triads and modes to develop a firm understanding of music theory in a variety of styles. We will discuss vocabulary in regards to tonal harmony and discuss questions such as: How do diminished 7th/neapolitan 6th/augmented 6th chords function? What are chromatic chords and how to use them? How do you know which chord will work best? What are the principles of good melodic design? What is the best way to compose and structure a melody?

During this Advanced Music Theory course we will cover the following topics:

Class 1: Triads
Class 2: Triad inversions
Class 3: Chord identification
Class 4: Chord progressions
Class 5: Voice leading, passing tones, and arpeggios 
Class 6: Figured Bass
Class 7: Intro to melody writing and Four-part harmony
Class 8: Review and final project
