Advanced Level
This one-on-one private tutoring course is for students interested in learning the skills assessed on the AP Lang exam, including synthesis, rhetorical analysis, and argument essays. The course will be tailored to individual student needs; however, a sample schedule has been provided below. Sample Pacing Schedule Week of July 31: Introduction to Rhetorical Analysis Week of August 7: FDR's Pearl Harbor Speech Week of August 14: Bush's 9/11 Speech Week of August 21: Bush's 20-Year Anniversary Speech Week of August 28: Florence Kelley's Speech on Child Labor Week of September 4: Madeleine Albright's Commencement Speech Week of September 11: Barack Obama's Eulogy for Ted Kennedy Week of September 18: "A Latina Judge's Voice" by Sonia Sotomayor Week of September 25: Introduction to Synthesis and Locavore Prompt Week of October 2: Wind Farms Prompt Week of October 9: Libraries Prompt Week of October 16: Cursive Writing Prompt Week of October 23: STEM Education Prompt Week of October 30: Introduction to Argument and Disobedience Prompt Week of November 6: Value of Competition Prompt Week of November 13: Value of Failure Prompt Since this is a one-on-one private tutoring class, when a student joins we will start with the week 1 content and adjust as needed to tailor the course to the student's needs. Assignments and handouts will be posted to the Outschool classroom. Students will be allowed to screen share or post their writing on Outschool for teacher feedback. Parental Guidance
During the rhetorical analysis unit, we will look at speeches from George Bush (9/11) and Ronald Reagan (Challenger Explosion) as these are speeches that have a clear rhetorical situation and clear rhetorical choices. These speeches are in the public domain and acknowledge the tragedy of these events. During these lessons, we will focus on the content of the speech. At the parent or learner's request, an alternative text can be provided.
