Advanced Level
As an AP and dual credit teacher, I know first-hand what college professors are looking for in their students' writings. Two of the most assigned essays in college are the argumentative essay and the analysis essay. My goal is to help learners deepen their understanding of each type, help learners improve their organizational and writing skills, show learners several ways to strengthen and cite their textual evidence, and review the MLA process. I want learners to become more confident in their research, writing, and citing skills! Lesson 1: Introduce essay writing/MLA pre-assessment and activities related to citing sources Lesson 2: Civil War document analysis (short story, primary sources, video clip) using the REHUGO process. If you are interested in learning more about REHUGO, please visit the web or ask me more about it! This is a critical piece in ensuring students are digging deeper into their analysis essays and not just explaining or re-telling. Lesson 3: Begin the writing process, working on the thesis and body paragraphs for Civil War REHUGO writing assignment/Developing effective Introductions (attention-getters, background information) and Conclusions/Experimenting with multiple ways to cite textual evidence Lesson 4: REHUGO analysis of documents related to the Civil Rights Movement/Analyze exemplars/Start body paragraphs Lesson 5: Finish Civil Rights Movement REHUGO writing Lesson 6: Start Student Choice writing portfolio project on the historical time period of their choice Lesson 7: Work on writing project/gathering sources Lesson 8: Continue project Lesson 9: Continue project Lesson 10: Works Cited page, editing, and course wrap-up!
Learning Goals
Students will learn to think and write critically and hone their writing, organizational, and MLA skills.
