Do you have what it takes to design and test a virtual bridge using cutting edge civil engineering software? Your challenge: Harness the forces of tension and compression to build the least expensive working bridge before class time runs out. During each class you will play the role of a civil engineer and be provided with a unique design challenge and classtime to design the least expensive working bridge. Just like a real civil engineer, you will be provided with specific requirements for your bridge including height, arch vs standard truss and weight distribution. The top bridge designs will earn you a spot on our ongoing class leaderboard not to mention bragging rights. IMPORTANT: This class is designed for students who have completed my 1 or 4 day bridge design challenge class. The tutorial portion of this class will not be covered during classtime, but feel free to send me a message and I can build an accelerated program for students who are interested in joining the Ongoing class right away. Returning students will be able to get straight to optimizing their bridge design. Tentative Class Agenda Week of 4/5/21 Theme Truss Bridges Students will be given a scenario code which will unlock a specific set of parameters in the bridge design program such as bridge height, span length as well as additional special requirements. During the class period students will problem solve and design the least expensive stable bridge possible. We will conclude class my presenting our bridges to see who is the day's civil engineering champion. Week of 4/12/21 Theme Arch Bridges Students will be given a scenario code which will unlock a specific set of parameters in the bridge design program such as bridge height, span length as well as additional special requirements. This week will feature an arch bridge with two connections to each abutment. During the class period students will problem solve and design the least expensive stable bridge possible. We will conclude class my presenting our bridges to see who is the day's civil engineering champion. Week of 4/19/21 Theme Pier Bridges Students will be given a scenario code which will unlock a specific set of parameters in the bridge design program such as bridge height, span length as well as additional special requirements. This week will feature a pier bridge with a unique support in the middle of the bridge's span. During the class period students will problem solve and design the least expensive stable bridge possible. We will conclude class my presenting our bridges to see who is the day's civil engineering champion. Week of 4/26/21 Theme Suspension Bridge Students will be given a scenario code which will unlock a specific set of parameters in the bridge design program such as bridge height, span length as well as additional special requirements. This week will feature a suspension with unique connections on both sides of the bridge to add additional support for the stresses on the bridge. During the class period students will problem solve and design the least expensive stable bridge possible. We will conclude class my presenting our bridges to see who is the day's civil engineering champion. Before our first class make sure to download AND install the Bridge Designer software. This is the address of the software: https://bridgedesigner.org/download/ Note: The installation files themselves will be downloaded from a second site called Sourceforge. There will not be time to download it once the class begins. Make sure it loads on your computer. You are welcome to experiment with the program, but don't stress if things seem too complicated. We will figure it all out together. Before our first class make sure to download AND install the Bridge Designer software. If it's tech, I teach it. As long as I can remember computers and electronics of all kind were my passion. From my first computer, a Commodore 64 with 64k RAM to my current gaming/coding laptop, I have always been enthralled by the creativity and ingenuity that technology can inspire.
I offer a variety of private and group classes.
Have an exciting tech project idea that I don't currently offer? Ask me and I will create it!

Every class I teach on Outschool is a subject that I personally care about and I try to kindle each students excitement about the potential of technology to change our world. I have been a gifted and talented and programming teacher for the past seventeen years. My 3D printers are always printing something interesting from a Ironman helmet to a giant dinosaur named Flexi-Rex. My classes are all about challenging students to test their limits and have a great time doing it. I look forward to meeting you in one of my classes soon!
